Robots in STEAM: A Recap of Our First Virtual Family Science Night
Tonight, homeschool families from across our community logged on for the first session of our free monthly virtual STEAM series, presented in partnership with Bridge the Gap Robotics Foundation, a student-led STEM nonprofit.

What is a robot?
A robot is a machine controlled by a computer that can sense its environment, make decisions, and take physical action. From there, we explored how scientists put robots to work in three very different fields.
Robots in Materials Science
Berkeley Lab's A-Lab is a robot-run lab guided by AI that can process 50 to 100 times as many samples as a human in a day, helping scientists discover new materials faster. 👉 See the A-Lab in action
Robots in Space
From Mars rovers to the Voyager probes, robots are our explorers where humans can't go (yet!). Families saw how NASA tests Mars heat shields with jet arcs, checked out the FUTUBA flight model from Space Station research, and learned how robots explore comets and asteroids.
Robots in Health Science
We looked at surgical robots, UV disinfection robots, robotic prosthetics and tiny nanobots. Then the kids took on a big question: what might go wrong?
Robots vs. AI
A robot is a physical machine with sensors and moving parts. AI is software that learns from data and makes decisions. The most powerful science tools use both.
Keep Learning at Home
Download our free [Robots in STEAM Activity Sheet]. Kids can review what they learned, research a real-world robot like Astrobee, PARO or Artemis I: Orion, and then design and label a robot of their own.

đź“… Join Us Next Month: Robots in STEAM, Part 2: Technology
🗓️ Tuesday, October 20 | 🕖 7:00 PM | 💻 Live on Zoom | 🆓 Free
Our robotics journey continues! Next month, we'll explore the Technology behind robots. These free sessions follow the same themes our STEAMventure Learning Labs students cover in class, and the whole family is welcome, enrolled or not.
